Survey Centre in conjunction with the University of Michigan Survey Research Center from January 28 to 30, 2019, held a three-day workshop “Survey Methods” dedicated to aspects of conducting surveys using various methods.
The workshop was led by experts from the University of Michigan Survey Research Center - Karin Maureen Schneider, Peter Rakesh Batra and Ramiro Flores Cruz. The University of Michigan Survey Research Center is one of the world's best centers specializing in this field. Within the workshop, the specifics of conducting interviews with various methods were discussed in detail: Face-to-Face interview, phone and web surveys, their differences in the questionnaire design, sample design, fieldwork, quality control and the necessary infrastructure.
Representatives of Nazarbayev University and the national statistical office took part in the workshop.
The research team of the Survey Centre participated in OECD’s sixth World Forum «The Future of Well-being» from November 27 to 29, held in Incheon, South Korea. The event, organized by the OECD in collaboration with the Statistics Office of Korea, attracted more than 3,000 participants from 102 countries. The main guests of the forum were world-famous economists Joseph Stiglitz, Jean-Paul Fitoussi, Jeffrey Sachs, as well as Princess of the Netherlands Petra Laurentien Brinkhorst.
The main topics of discussion at the event were the key trends affecting the development of well-being, such as digitalization, transformation of power and strengthening the role of business in ensuring sustainable and comprehensive well-being. At the discussion platform topics such as the challenges and opportunities of using digital technologies, new management methods needed to ensure inclusive growth and sustainable well-being, as well as various approaches to integrating well-being into business models were considered.
The Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz emphasized the role of companies in improving well-being of employees. According to him, job satisfaction is an integral part of subjective well-being, as many employees spend one third of their lives on work. However, the company's focus only on maximizing short-term profits does not maximize social value and productivity. Under the leadership of J. Stiglitz, at the forum the new report of the OECD Group of Experts «Beyond GDP: Measuring What Counts for Economic and Social Performance» was presented, which reviews the progress made over the past 10 years in collecting data on well-being, as well as their use in politics.
In summing up the Forum, it was noted that today the global political community is just beginning to take the first steps to revise development priorities towards strengthening well-being and inclusive sustainable development. At the same time, the Forum’s speakers particularly noted the need to develop international cooperation of governments implementing such a policy, which today is represented only by small organizations, or takes place on the margins of individual events on the topic of well-being.
